Fiction vs Reality of Developers

Updated: Oct 21, 2023

In the world of developers often times there is a notion that we automatically know what to do and that because we know computers that we know everything even before we decide to do anything even before we decide to join a new business and that where know it all's and that we don't have to figure things out.

Reality is developers are people as well yes we know our fields well but we are like construction workers as often in any forms of development you have documentation that has to be done, tools that need to be setup or bought, sometimes you have to pick up new material, and often times you work as a team although not all have such benefits.

So in reality any new developer is going to be qualified to some degree but doesn't mean they know your business remember a new developer is a new employee or contractor not an existing one. That should be kept in mind In my opinion developers is about signing up to actually do the job along with meeting the closest qualifications (I have previously made my point about why assessments tell you nothing bout a developers actual skills) as development regardless is difficult. I would most certainly say a trial run is better to see how they actually do on a project to know a developer as assumptions are one of the biggest bad habits in the development world you don't know someone until you know them.

If you end up being a hiring manager who reads this I hope your inspired to do the same as resumes don't always tell the whole story and an automated system doesn't account for a developers actual skills or assessments which are useless if the developer is new. Also even co developers don't often want new people on the team even if the business does. As while some may think we all live in a nice world reality is we don't.

For those who might be existing developers looking for advice nothing in the developer world is easy as unless your family member is already an executive in the business or you have good friends in the tech field. If this isn't the case times can be difficult for you and sometimes you may have to pave your own way even if that's not easy.

Ultimately you have to have confidence in who you are as a developer even if other people don't as you have to be your own person and strive to be who you are as a developer that has to start with you.
